Library Corner- May 2024
By Mrs Campling, School Librarian
This Half Term
In library lessons this half-term we have been exploring genres - different types of story. 5 zones were set up, each with 5 books all of the same genre. Children investigated each zone, looking at the titles, covers and blurbs of the books to try and figure out what genre each zone was. They then either wrote, or discussed their guesses, as well as which book from each zone they most liked the look of! This activity saw some really great discussion between the children, particularly where there were books that could be classified in more than one genre, and it drew their attention to books that were maybe different to the ones they would usually gravitate towards.
We’ve also had lots of gentle browsing, book changing and quiet reading; a welcome break for many classes who have been very busy with residentials, assembly rehearsal, or SATS!
There’s also been Reading for Pleasure club for LKS2, which does exactly what it says on the tin - bring a book, sit and read!
Milionaire's Update
We have four brand-new millionaires this half-term:
Emma G, Flamingoes
Gabriella W, Toucans
Flora W, Toucans
Owen H, Giraffes
The following children have also increased their millions:
Eli K, Sharks, now past 2 million
Alex B, Sharks, now past 3 million
Mason P, Giraffes, now past 8 million
Well done everyone! In next half-term’s Library Corner we’ll be finding out how many words we’ve read as a school - so watch this space!
Recommended Reads
Big Bad Wolf Investigates Fairy Tales - Catherine Cawthorne
Ever wondered if your favourite fairy tales could actually have happened? This book is all about debunking the good, the bad and the ugly through scientific investigation, with experiments themed around a number of fairy tales. The combination of STEM topics, real science, and stories that children will be very familiar with makes this a real treat, especially for any budding scientists (or cynics)!
The Lost Sun Lion - Lee Newbury
The third in a trilogy that began with the Last Firefox, this book sees hero Charlie returning once again to Fargone to restore its heart and stop the evil giant Gawr from plunging it into chaos. Each book has introduced more gorgeous fantasy creatures (anyone else want a pet firefox?) and the Sun Lion itself proves no exception. I am expecting this to be very popular in the library!
Alex vs Axel: The Impossible Quests - Sam Copeland
Ordinary kid Alex finds himself out of his depth when he switches places with Axel, a monster-slaying boy hero from another world. Both must complete Impossible Quests and find a way back home - or there might not be a home to come back to!
Perfect for fans of Loki, and other books with hi-jinks and adventure.
