The Golden Mile
By Mr Cowles, P.E. Lead
The Golden Mile is a safe, simple and measurable way to improve health and physical activity. Every pupil can get involved by walking, jogging or running around their track within the safety of the school grounds.
At OWPS, every class from Foundation up to Year 6 participates each week in the Golden Mile activity. Children complete laps around the school playground, and their scores contribute to their class totals. Certificates can be gained at key points: 10 miles, 25 miles, 50 miles, 75 miles, 100 miles and 125 miles.
This year, we have introduced an extra challenge! Each class has a target to complete a set number of miles by the end of the Autumn Term which is equivalent to the distance from OWPS to a location in the UK. Here are the targets for each class:
Class | No. of Miles | Location |
Penguins | 38.8 | Northampton |
Magpies | 39.4 | Leicester |
Iguanas | 58.3 | Skegness |
Elephants | 55.1 | Hunstanton |
Giraffes | 64.9 | Lincoln |
Squirrels | 56 | Nottingham |
Nightingales | 82.4 | Oxford |
Macaws | 80.7 | Birmingham |
Flamingoes | 86.8 | Chesterfield |
Cobras | 82 | London |
Wombats | 98.9 | Sheffield |
Armadillos | 99 | Norwich |
Toucans | 64 | Bury St. Edmunds |
Sharks | 53.6 | Milton Keynes |
Year 6 have been challenged to get to their destination AND back again! If a class achieves their challenge, they will be awarded 5 marbles to go into their class jar.
We look forward to keeping you updated on the children's achievements each week in the school newsletter. You can also view the weekly Golden Mile results by clicking here.
