Burwell House
The first residential visit is a two night visit for children in Year 3, to Burwell House in Cambridgeshire. Burwell House is run by Cambridgeshire Outdoors (part of Cambridgeshire County Council) and has provided residential visits for over 50 years. It provides fantastic opportunities for both indoor and outdoor learning. Burwell House was built in 1787 and was originally a family home, and we choose this for the children’s first residential as it has a real home from home feel to support children in what for many might be their first time away from school.
During our stay, we take part in outdoor activities including team building activities, the Great Eggscape challenge (building a parachute to protect an egg!), orienteering and outdoor games, all in the beautiful grounds of Burwell House, as well as a visit to the local nature reserve. Burwell House also has its own TV studio, and half a day is spent in there recording news broadcasts which we have written at school before the visit. This is a wonderful experience for the children, as they have access to film cameras, mixing and editing equipment, and a greenscreen - far beyond what we would be able to do in school. The activities are led by the experienced teachers at Burwell House.
Children and staff from the most recent trip in 2023 commented:
“My favourite part was when I was doing the camera in the TV studio.” (Child)
“I enjoyed every single activity!” (Child)
"Many children said that they enjoyed the Fox game the most. This was our final activity to end Burwell where the children had to act as foxes and hide from the farmers." (Staff member)
